its "ambient" light thats light up the dash.. nothing else also called indirect night lightning.
its so you can see where the gearstick is at night

Sounds a bit strange.?
Once you have driven the car for a few miles, it becomes second nature where the gear-stick is....unless there is an upgrade pack where you can move the location of the gearstick around...
As such you should be looking at the road ahead, not where the gear stick is.
Apologies if I am being a little flippant about it!!
The Vx literature says its so the centre console doesn't look like its floating in mid air at night.
It's to illuminate the directions you've scribbled on the back of your hand if you haven't got a satnav system.
