Default Oil level warking light & help

    Hi all

I've got an '06 1.8 vvt exclusiv with 42k miles. Last few days after doing a long journey (over 100 miles) the oil level warning light has come on.

First time it happened I pulled over immediately and checked the oil - it is just slightly under the max mark. I started up again and the light went off immediately and stayed off for the rest of the journey. However yesterday it did the exact same thing - came on, then went off after stopping for a few mins. It does go immediately off on starting, it doesn't stay on a few seconds.

Could this just be a sensor fault or something more sinister? The oil and filter were changed 10k miles ago by the (non Vauxhall) main dealer I got the car from. They said they had used official Vx oil and filter, and for the last 10k miles since the fill I've had no issue.

I'm getting the oil changed next week in any case, and I'm a bit confused; the car has a main dealer history and up to the last service had been filled with 10w40. The last fill was 5w30. Thing is, according to the handbook 10w40 isn't recommended - is this correct?!

Any help would be great. Thanks

Thanks, would the 10w40 used previously cause any potential issues, for example the oil level light to come on? It has 5w30 now & the car runs great, everything seems ok - I hope!

No - shouldnt have really. The fully synth 5w30 Dexos II GM oil is long life low ash so better for the engine / breather system.

Regular changes and you should be OK.

Ok great thanks! Any idea why a main Vx dealer would use 10w40?! I don't know if it was even Vx oil in that case. Bizarre.

Also if anyone has any advice on the oil light prob that would be great

Try a new oil pressure switch, they do go occasionally and it frightens the life out of you!

Thanks, yeah the previous owner only did 5k miles per year so hopefully all ok! I'm going to use the proper Vx 5w30 synthetic stuff every 10k miles, hopefully will keep it running sweet. It's a cracking engine.
