Idea regarding EGR problems!

Am not sure at all if this would work, but I'll never know if I don't post it. It may not work or it may be an ingenius idea lol.

I have read on many a thread about egr valve "sticking". I take it that this is the plate inside not being freely able to move from closed to open position due to carbon deposit buildup?

What IF the EGR valve was modified so the diameter of the moving plate was slightly reduced OR a groove was somehow profiled into the inside of the body (a groove around the inside diameter) where the plate sits at it's closed position, leaving a small gap for the carbon to move more freely and not get stuck as much?

It's not something that I'm planning to do, just an idea that may just work.

The key to the EGR valve doing its job is when its closed for it to be perfectly sealed. Anything that may affect this is not a good idea, and I can't picture your idea helping in this.

Thanks for your comment. Was just a suggestion to maybe stop it sticking.

What about inlaying the circular part of the egr body around where the valve closed position is with an alternative material that carbon could not stick to?

Would this be possible? Maybe an anti-stick gasket material fixed in there?

As Dan says m8, it will only make the 'effects' of a malfunctioning EGR valve worse.

When the EGR valve fails to operate - via a broken solenoid or very bad corrosion and the valve can not open, the engine will perform better as the pressure in the exhaust manifold is maiintained and clean air going into the combustion chamber.

When a valve jams open (usually due to corrosion on the solenoid) or is slow to close then this will produce the Flat spot effect under 2,000rpm, and probably reduce power output above 2,000rpm where it should be closed.

short of teflon coating it there's nothing to stop the stuff sticking other than reducing the oil mist and regular cleaning of the valve and solenoid

There's also one other point to remember ...

... acceptable normal performance for a reasonable time period = customer happy

... occasional failure of readily replaceable item = manufacturer/servicing agent happy


If you can modify an assembly that occasionally fails to perform far longer between failures, good on you. But no way will GM/Vx/Op pick up on the same idea as that will reduce their income from parts, servicing and repair.
