Default Tuning box on a 150? Where to start?

Hey. Been looking more and more at these tuning boxes some of you are using and I'm interested in trying one out.

Everyone is saying caterman, but where can I get one and what do they retail for?

Also, is the performance increase a massive improvement or can it vary engine to engine? Is it likely that I won't notice any change?

    Any help appreciated

Looking at your other thread regarding swirl issues, are you sure you want to fit a tuning box to your 150..?

Best way to go is remap mate better results and kinder to the car as tuni g boxes only fool the ecu to chuck more fuel in that's it I have experienced te caterman box ad a remap and now I have a remap for 180quid you can pay more for boxes te remap wins hands down and I don't get loads of black smoke when I had the box on

Once it's running as it should be and repairs are done.

In that case, forget the box idea and go for a remap as Winne says above.

What are expected results one over the other based on mpg/bhp/mph. Oh and cost.

On paper results are usually tipped in the boxes favour, but driveability, and the way the extra power is derived is in the remaps favour.

Boxes range from £80+. while remaps can be had from £180+

Both Remaps and Tuning boxes pose the same risks for to the engine. Swirl valves clogged up and jamming. If you want to prevent that happening again, block the EGR off with a big plate. If you do not have a remap to turn the EGR off though, you will get a management light. It will not affect running but may irritate you.

Tuning boxes usually get higher bhp results than remaps but get simular torque. My tuning box (CDR-T) increases fuel pressure and boost pressure for more power without the big cloud of smoke. People complain that tuning boxes just fool the ECU and yes they do but to exactly the same end as a remap. It's a diesel, you either increase fuel pressure or increase the injector openning time to dump more fuel in. There is no ignition advancing, you don't have to worry about air/fuel ratios.

Tuning boxes can be easily removed and refitted and can not be over writen by VX doing a flash update when servicing. If you want the same flexibility from a map, you are looking at 500-600 quid which is more than a tuning box. If you just get a 180 quid remap from fred, they haven't spent tens or hundreds of man hours testing the map to ensure it is safe for the engine. So it is no better than a remap again in those terms.

The remaps can sometimes get torque to come in much earlier than a tuning box but most remaps will be hit and miss.

    Expect 180-190bhp from a remap and 280lbft-300lbft
190-195 from a tuning box and simular torque

They are pricey but the CRD-T like I said has boost and fuel adjustment with different maps and finite adjustment to ensure it has maximum compatability
