    Default 1.9 bi-turbo

I've been told Vauxhall are launching a 180PS twin-turbo version of the 1.9CDTi. Is this true?

Also heard that they're dropping the Italian 1.9 CDTi units for CDTi versions of the older 2.0Di/2.0DTi. I see their new 4x4 has a 2.0common-rail knocking out 150PS.

    Cheers H

Over here it is already available in the new Saab 9-3 and later this year in the Cadillac BLS; but rumour is that it will be available in 2008 some Opels and Alfa's.

And no, the 2.0 cdti from the Antara has nothing to do with the old Opel DTI-engines; it is a Daewoo-engine

The Saab twin turbo will be available in the UK in January. The Vx version should be 190+bhp from what I've heard.

In addition to the CDTTI bi-turbo, Auto Express have reported that there will be a new CDTI engine in the new Vectra in various strengths from about 120bhp, similar to the new 123 bhp unit in the new Corsa.

I have seen it suggested that this is a part of a general engine-downsizing which in means the same or more power from a even smaller engine unit with litlle or no loss of torque, and crucially lower emissions and in the hope of a tax break for diesels under Euro 5 regs, aimed at the bigger-volume sellers. This downsizing can also be seen in the new 170bhp 1.6 VVT T engine which has replaced the 2.0T in the Astra, and which may well replace the 2.2 Direct or the 2.OT in the new Vectra (if Auto Express are to be believed, which they cannot of course). This 'downsizing' can also be seen with 1.4 turbocharged petrol units from VW and Fiat.

As for VX, it seems to me that they are not going to put all their diesel eggs in the Fiat basket, and are continuing development of Isuzu designed/derived units regardless.

Seems sensible, I'd heard that they were going to go back to their own/Isuzu diesels to replace the Fiat units. I've seen some reports on the 9-3 which quote it as having a 180PS twin turbo 1.9 diesel.

VW are replacing all their naturally aspirated engines with turbo, and supercharged &turbo'd units. They've got the 1.4 in 140 and 170PS variants, but will be bringing out a version minus the super (still have turbo) at 120PS to replace the 1.6FSi. Supposedly going through the whole range from 1.0 upwards.

All seems good, but I do find a highly tuned small engine sometimes lacks bottom end grunt. Maybe its justa case as to how well its developed. I had a 170PS 2.0turbo Astra and swear by it being the best car I've ever had. No lag, pulled well, was economical, sounded good - hmm, why did I swap?

    Cheers H

I think you're right about the downsizing.

The 1.9 cdti is not really a 'Fiat-engine'. It was developed by Fiat with GM-money. After the 'divorce' in 2005, GM payed 1.550.000.000 euro to end the joint-venture and they gave back the 10% shares in Fiat.
But GM kept 50% of the Polish factory where the 1.3 cdti is made and they have together with Fiat the ownership about the JTD/CDTI-technology and are free to use that technology (and the Pratola Serra factory) for cars inside Europe.
I don't know about the Isuzu-engines but I think they are getting old and not able to deal with Euro5. What I know is that GM is developing a new series of V6 diesel engines (2.7 and 2.9)
