Default Engine Electrics - Warning Light Mystery

    Hi guys,
The engine/transmission warning light (car with a spanner through the middle) has started to appear (in the rev counter display) all of a sudden when I turn the ignition on, on my GSI but without the engine running. As soon as I start the engine it disappears and doesn't come on again when driving.

I've just picked the car up from having the bumper and bonnet resprayed and obviously they need to disconnect the electrics in the bumper to take it off (foglights, parking sensors and Xenon headlight washers in my case) so not sure if that might have anything to do with it? I've tested all 3 and they all work fine). The warning light has never appeared before so I'm puzzled - anyone have any ideas?

    Thanks

The car/spanner light is not a service light.

The service light is either the word "INSP" in the odometer display, or a car/oilcan light.

The car/spanner light is the engine electronics / autobox / immobiliser fault light.

The fault code needs reading out to establish what's put it on.

If the light goes out after you start the car it has a fault stored, but its not active. The diagnostics on the car require it to have 10 fault free starts/drives before the symbol disapears when turning the ignition on. I had this a couple of weeks ago but it sorted itself. It was probably a signal glitch from gearbox sensor. I wouldnt worry just yet.

Apart from being a non helpful comment, the 'bulb' is actually an LED which is soldered to the speedo assembly PCB.

If it goes out after 10 restarts, I'd ignore it, but it's probably worth getting the faults read.

Thanks for your help guys – maybe the car was started when the bumper electronics were disconnected which started the fault, but now it’s all been connected up again it’s just a stored fault, as bigcarman79 says? I’ll try the 10 starts and see if it disappears
