    Default Pic Advice

righto...for anyone any good with a camera !..

I've got a very rare coin (1562 sixpence) which i am going to sell on ebay..
however.. i cant take a decent picture to get a close up of the detail etc... I guess this is due to my digi camera... it takes great normal pics but i've gone through all the settings and even sorted a feature which enables close ups..but still not close enough for this coin...any advice on how to take a pic of it at all?..

my only suggestion is macro mode (usually a pic of a flower), 15-20 cm away with No Flash (rest camera on something or use a tripod for stability). Use highest resolution pos and if there is a FINE setting use that, instead or normal settings.

EDIT - Ooh, scanner, good idea too!

were you holding the camera while in macro mode, or did you rest it/use a tripod. You may need to use a tripod for stability as often the flash is disabled in macro mode, meaning a rock-steady camera is vital. make sure there is very good ambient light as well.

Stick the coin to a glass using blue tak, rest the camera on the work top, have GOOD lighting. Get the camera on it's most fine and highest pixels and get it as close as possible. Set the auto timer (so you don't have to touch any buttons).

When the pic is taken, download it and trim all the excess around it. If the number of pixels is high enough, you will get a decent pic detail.

Is that good enough to see the detail?? Taken with no flash and in a rush. I could probably get better results if I tried and took a bit more time.

Good idea from Ste. Blutac hold the coin vertical making a tripod or resting the camera even easier to use. Also good advice about using the timer.

Had a go myself (hard-up, could only afford 2p!), but coin is resting on the table, I've used a mini tripod, one of those bendy leg sorts; and I am holding it steady. A tripod is even better, and Ste's idea is great too. Two pics, second one I've lit the area just using a cheapo torch, but there is too much light!
Camera is taking 8 Mega pixel pictures in FINE mode. Camera set to macro (flower) and no flash. Holding camera about 10 cm away.
