    Default Average speed cameras

    How do they work?

As i have to go through one of these on the M5(J4A) most nights, and i normally stay in lane 1 and set the cruise to 60mph and keep at that till i get onto the off ramp for J4.

But ive had cars come up behind me bearing down on me wanting to go faster, or cars/lorrys going past me at well over 50mph.

So am i right in thinking im in the right or am i not?

They measure the time you've travelled between the two cameras, which gives your speed.

(And on the M5, I suggest you set the cruise to 50mph, there's very little tolerance there........still haven't seen any workmen doing anything yet!)

I go through that section every week, [I did today] and a few others like it. As far as I know the SPECS cameras use number plate recognition technology and compare plates between cams and do a simple time/distance calc to get avg speed.

Transgressors who go over the tolerance get NIP'ed automatically as I understand. No doubt one of the bobbies on here will confirm/clarify.

Like you I just stick the cruise on at the appropriate speed and let all the muppets who want to hoof past do so.

Average speed cameras calculate your speed between two points. It may not be sequential cameras but might be between the 1st and 3rd for example. Not all cameras on a stretch of road will be active.

I agree that people don't seem to understand them. I set the cruise at 50mph on the M1 jnc 25-28 camera zone. I see people going 70mph and then braking a bit before the camera, they will be getting a little gift on their doormats!

Specs. cameras were put up on the M56 a couple of years ago. I did the same and set the CC and then watched people fly down the outside lane then brake for the last camera.

I then watched the, "Just received an NIP for speeding on the M56 but I know I was under the limit when I passed the camera" posts appear on pepipoo..."

I heard that too. We all used to change lanes just in case.
