Tyre - Chunk Missing - Is it dangerous?

Hi Guy's,

My wheels on my Vec-B were pointing outwards this morning and I somehow managed to spot this chunk missing out of my tyre.

Its on the outer part of the tread.....cant seem to work out how on earth this happened.

You opinions please folks!

I had a very low car in the past with tyres with worse than that i wouldnt worry too much, obviously it would be better for you to change it as in effect thats close to the ''wire''

Don't mean to get all serious on this one but here I go!

As your tyres are the ONLY thing holding your car on the road and your life depends on them then don't risk it. Yes it will cost you but if you had an accident and died then what's worse!

That tyre looks like it's got a lot of tread left which sucks but it's still not worth risking it and get a couple more.

If you do have an accident and the investigator sees that then they could use it as an excuse not to pay you out. Not to mention if that chunk goes below 1.4mm of tread then you could get a fine from the police! (I think).

Don't risk it - CHANGE IT!

EDIT: Plus if that chunk is low enough you could have a blow out as your tyre expands in the heat and at 70mph (assuming you stick to the limit ) then that's not good!

i'd say just drive it. the chunk isn't lower than the base of groove, so even if lightning did strike twice, it would be no closer to the braiding than the base of the treads, which must have plenty in reserve.

As there is plenty of tread, the missing bit doesn't put it below the tread depth anyway, so I personally wouldn't worry about it too much. I reckon it would pass the MOT inspection and the police probably wouldn't notice or do you even if they did.

I wouldn't replace it as it hasn't cut deep enough.

The cut in the base of the tread looks more serious than the chunk of missing tread. Have you checked there is no air leaking out (soapy water test). In the past I have removed nails from tyres and if they are not leaking I've just carried on driving on them. A cut is worse, in this case I would probably just carry on driving but check it perdiodically.

I haven't tried Continentals yet... prefer Eagle F1's myself

Havent tried the test mate, I think i later today, but there dont seem to be any air loss as its been driving fine-no pulling etc, and the tyre looks quite well inflated, as it was when I had the change over done!

Nothing to worry about with that, if everyone on here looked at there tyres i think they might be shocked
