Have i made a mistake CDTI!!

Hi all mentioned i was looking to part ex my saab for an 07 vectra sri cdti 150 auto,got it yesterday and im over the moon,BUT tonight sitting in the drive through i reved the engine and theres an whining noise which speeds up with the engine,having a look on this site im lead to belive its the tensioner of the alternator belt,but the more worrying thing was i could smell oil burning,and when reving it slightly the revs took there time to come down,checked the oil on the dipstick and its show half way but its not very thick on the dip stick lucky i have 3mths warranty,but any ideas before i go back to the garage tomorrow would be highly appreciated

To me there is only one cause - Turbocharger is on it's way. The whining is the bearings and the oil smell coupled with the 'runaway' revving (engine will rev on it's own or will take time for revs to drop when throttle is released when in neutral/clutch depressed). At least get it looked at as it could fail at anytime and the engine will run on the oil and could possibly self destruct.

had it 2 days hope the garage stand up to there warranty what sort of job is it to do,im thinking all sorts now

If you paid for it in the last 7 days you shouldn't have a problem. You also have the right to reject a car within 7 days if the seller refuses to fix the fault so I believe. Phone CAB m8 if you're in doubt.

If it is the turbo m8, you were unlucky as the turbo isn't a common fault on these.

There is, however I ain't 100%.

Follow the intake pipe coming from the top of the airbox - you will come to the MAF sensor with it's electrical connection, keep following the pipe and after the MAF there is a soft rubber part of the pipe for flex, this is attached to a solid plastic pipe by a jubilee clip. This solid plastic goes down and attaches to the tubo compressor.
If you remove this pipe (God only knows how but it is possible, other members have done it apparently) and push the compressor wheel gently it will move along its axis and you can gently pull it back but not by much.

There should be little movement, but not much. Excessive movement means the bearings are going or are shot. There will be oil there anyway regardless of failed bearing or not as the crank case breather vents to the intake system before the compressor wheel.

Remember and only do this when the engine has been off and cold - that compressor gets very hot with the oil vent and charge.

I would stick up another thread m8 asking for the details before doing this, as someone may be able to guide you alot better.
