Default ebay item I sent not delivered

Hi all, looking for a bit of advice about a transaction on e-bay.

The wife sold an item of clothing, I packaged it up securely and sent it to the address it said on paypal.

I got proof of postage when I sent it.

My question is how do I know the person at the other end has not received it and is just saying it has not arrived. With hind sight I should have made it recorded delivery.

Do I give them a full refund or does it wait for the result of the post investigation?

Never happened to me before, would appreciate any advice you have.

They have a positive feedback rating of 35

    Cheers

I have just had a refund for something lost in the post from ebay, although the seller had no way of tracking the parcel (international). I would tell the buyer you have proof of postage & you will get back to them once you have spoken to royal mail (or whichever courier you used).
hopefully they will find it, but of course there is an element of trust involved.

When you say it was a refund from ebay, I take it it was the original seller rather than ebay.

The trust is the thing, thought it a bit funny that we had to ask the person a few days after they won it if they were going to pay for it. I need to check with the post office now.

    Thanks

I'd tend to refund straight away and then claim through royal mail. But I've only ever had two non delivery of items in 500 odd items I've sent.

Keeps them sweet and don't risk negative feedback, which can put alot off. Know it would me if it was a recent comment.
