    Default Whats the problem?

Guys noticed my car is starting to use oil. It first started in Sept when I needed to top up a litre. Then 6 weeks later 1200-1400 miles later, oil light came on again with the resulting need for another litre.

Theres No smoke on start up or when accelerating hard, no oil on the driveway. so I assume its using it, but why? its only done 43k and it never burned any oil between services before.

Main reason I ask id the 3rd year warranty is up 23rd November. So what should I / Garage be looking for to see if its serious mechor seal failure?

    Thanks in advance guys.

Get it in quick! If it's been properly serviced during the warranty then if something is causing it to leak oil or burn it best get VX to pay for the fix!

What flavour of Vectra is is? I'd suggest that it sounds like something like turbocharger bearing oil seals. If yours is not turbocharged, though, then it won't be that!

Hi Paul. The model is a Vectra 2.2 direct with 43k. Runs great at the moment with no Visable signs for blue plume at the rear, so its only just using oil in a low but steady qty.

Is there an oil leak? Check the undertray for signs of oil leaking from somewhere. I'd have thought, though, that a leak as significant as that sounds would have left oily patches when the car is parked for any length of time.

It has to be going somewhere! Maybe get a mate to follow you down the road on a nice, bright day to spot smoke. Generally, smoke under power = piston rings, on the over-run = valve guides.

Is the brake servo a vacuum servo on Vectras? Maybe oil from the crankcase ventilation system is making its way into the engine via that.

Remember, if the crankcase is pressurising (worn piston rings), it might only leak when the car is being driven, making it difficult to spot when the car is stationary, engine off.

Just the ramblings of a madman!

There is a known fault on the 2.2's with duff oil scraper rings. Mine went and got fixed under warranty. Thing is im sure its only on the SE not YH. VX will top you up, then get you to do 1000 miles. They will then take a reading and take it from there.

Thanks for the replies to date guys. Food for thought there. I think I will discuss with the dealer, as he will surely gain from this work if its warranty covered!!

I will let you all know how I get on in due course, but if any one else wants to offer their advice in the mean time - please feel free to let me know your thoughts/experiences.
