    Default Chinook rescues Sea King

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/7493515.stm

    Quite interesting to watch!

I couldn't believe that the carabina they used would take the weight of a Sea King! (6 tonnes empty weight as far as I can see). It was a fair size carabina, but to take a hanging weight of 6+ tonnes, made more by the fact the load is moving/dynamic, kinda surprised! It probably has a SWL well in excess of 6 tonnes, it just didn't look that substantial.

I have to say, those Chinooks are simply amazing pieces of machinery. Down here, I don't know what they do as AFAIK there aren't any air bases around here, but in a certain area of the Downs they'll often fly over really low. You can hear them coming from a distance as you hear the thudding of the blades, but even though you know it's approaching, when it does burst over the tree-tops the noise and sheer size of the thing is just immense!

Superb piloting, I bet there's a big risk when actually lifting it that it would pull the Chin down like a tow rope snapping, and ain't it neat that the King turns to face once lifted.

As for the noise, I went up the runway dropping some lads off one night on base and on the way back I took a wrong turn and ended up 200 yrds from a chopper that was about to take off, and it is deafening, gawd knows what the pilot would've been calling me at the time, but I bet it wasn't postable.

I used to be the MT guy on 202 sqn RAF Boulmer and had to refuel the Sea King there ... They are imposing enough!! Used to have to 'hot refuel' with rotors turning sometimes... That was awesome!!!

    But a Chinook... They're MASSIVE!!

They do this more than you would imagine, especially to lynx's in NI theres only one base for the chinook and thats RAF Odiham.

Watching the vid I'm Not sure were the 6 tonnes comes from D.?

However, I did a quick google and a sea king does indeed appear to weigh between 5.2 and 6.2 Tonnes.

Normally you'd apply a safety factor so I'd have a guess that the lifting gear is at least 12 tonne rated. As you point out the load is dynamic, although I'd be tempted to regard it as a stong wind. There is a risk of snatches though. so I'd up the SWl further. I'g go for 15-20 tonne SWL kit as a guess.

I work with 6 tonne SWL strops/gear regularly and you'd be surprised how thin they are. The kit in the vid is much much bigger.

Looked up the Chinook and it can lift around 12 tonnes from its central hook. So I am probably a bit OTT in my sums above!

    That's what I did.

lol, I know - that's what I was meaning. It doesn't look very substantial, and you'd wonder about it taking 6 tonnes!, but if it's lifting 6 tonnes it's going to be rated much higher. It just doesn't look like it would lift six left alone more! lol

A 6 tonne chain is about the diameter of two fingers!
A fibre strop at 6 tonnes would fit between thumb and fore finger easily
A 6 tonne webbing strap is about 3 fingers wide and not suitable for this lift!

Looking at the vid, those strops at least doube the diameter of the 6 tonne strops I use
