I couldn't believe that the carabina they used would take the weight of a Sea King! (6 tonnes empty weight as far as I can see). It was a fair size carabina, but to take a hanging weight of 6+ tonnes, made more by the fact the load is moving/dynamic, kinda surprised! It probably has a SWL well in excess of 6 tonnes, it just didn't look that substantial.
I have to say, those Chinooks are simply amazing pieces of machinery. Down here, I don't know what they do as AFAIK there aren't any air bases around here, but in a certain area of the Downs they'll often fly over
really low. You can hear them coming from a distance as you hear the thudding of the blades, but even though you know it's approaching, when it does burst over the tree-tops the noise and sheer size of the thing is just immense!
