    Default Swirl valve

Hi all i have been having a good look at my engine [ cdti 1.9/ 150 ]and have found the swirl valve bar has come off .
I have phoned main dealers and had a chat with the Foreman engineer and he says it dose not cause any problems if not fitted
    Is this TRUE ?
if so WHY are they fitted in the first place ?
To repair this he said i would need a new manifold etc at £300+
    and now the main question
Can you just get a new bar + clips or is there a diy repair that car be done IE make a new bar and speed clips on the pegs sticking it
    Jacko
Ps what are the swirl valves made off ? Aluminium/ Steel /plastic
    Thanks for any help

The 120s don't have'em, and the 150s need'em. They are designed to lengthen or shorten the inlet tract as and when needed. They affect the torque output of the engine at certain rpm. Apparently if you remove them, you will get less low end torque on the 150.

BMW owners already remove their troublesome ones to prevent engine damage.

They effectively close off one of the inlet ducts in the head, so combustion air swirl and tumble is improved in the power cylinder (helps combustion) and so air flow, swirl values and tumble can be optimised across the rev and load range. They are needed, else why would they be there? The engine will run with them left 'open' but low end performance will suffer.

Left open they will impair low down torque and produce alot of smoke under 2,000rpm.

Left closed they will affect high end power and cause smoking above 2,000rpm. The swirl flap can be off for a long time, its just when people are cleaning their egr valve, or the rod has been off for a very long time or the valves are jammed shut that people discover the manifold needs repalced.

Their purpose is to mix the air mixture as under 2,000rpm the engine partially runs off exhaust gases and these swirls make sure the mixture is 'tumbled' for cleaner more efficient combustion.

ive just looked at one close up at vx and its just that a flat plastic flap!, shutting of part of the inlet port for each bore, the new part is still cheap and nasty looking and dont realy look up to the job but if thats all there is to offer!!, latest part number is 55210201 as checked 16/1/10. quoted around £290. yea!!! , (£552 fitted), anybody got one for sale cheap ?.
