    Default Friggin Builders....

At my wits end now. Sick of the builders doing the new development behind me now. I am sick to death of the endless drilling from 6am until upto sometimes 11pm at night, the wolf whistling at our lass, the endless noise all the f*cking time.

Where do I stand here? The foreman is never available to speak to me and I only get some dumb sales lass on the end of the phone asking me where I would like to move in-to.

I understood you could not start work until 8am and had to finish loud digging and no power tools after 8pm at night? ESPECIALLY at weekends. Woken up yesterday at 6:30am to a jack hammer being used on a Sunday!

Anyone know the exact laws so I can get this sorted. I work long hours and just need some peace and quiet now and again..... I just don't seem to get it at all Our lass doesn't like going out in the garden at the moment which is a shame seeing as just spent a fortune on getting it done

As far as I remember, from doing our house up, was we could not start banging and drilling until 8am weekdays and 9am on weekends and finish by 7pm...

The best thing to do is contact your local council and get them to send in a environmental officer.

From working in the Council highways department I know there are no specifc laws dictating work hours, other than what each local authority dictate themselves. Most say no work to start before 8am and finish by 5pm with weekend working by special arrangement. However, each local authority is different and the working hours will have been agreed as part of the planning approval so first port of call is to your local planning office.

Second is find out the name of the house builder then contact their head office. As you said the houses look identical to my new house, then it could be persimmon as they are northern based company with a head office in York. They have regional offices too, and my local one covering North east is on Metro retail park, gateshead. The number will be on the www.persimmon-homes.co.uk website. (hope the link works)

Our building site, (its only 25% complete) donít start work until 7.30 and are gone by 4.30pm. They donít work weekends either.

Talk to your local council's environmental health department. They'll know the limits on working hours.
We had trouble with roads being laid at 7 am on a Sunday, but these folks sorted it out. Most of the big builders adhere to some kind of code of practice, so take a look at their website, and write to their construction director, or his equivalent.

We run a lot of very noisy machines in our job, the planner for example has a 900hp engine reving away and we are not allowed to start up before 7am we do do some jobs on a night due to traffic but this is through special arragement and everyone is notified of this.So ring your council as they all have a noise nusiance department now and take this very serious.

All good advice about the noise... nothing to add to that.

In relation to the wolf whistles.... give your local police station a call and ask to speak to a local officer, or ask for your local Community Suppport Officer to pay you a visit. Wolf whistling can be classed as a public order offence as it is likely to cause alarm, harrassment or distress. As it is something which is obviously affecting your quality of like it is the sort of thing that your local beat officer or CSO would be best qualified to deal with..... perhaps they could just have a friendly word wth the builders in the first instance. All sounds a bit drastic I know, but it should do the trick.
