    Default New Tyres

So my ex girlfriend, I had a daughter with her so still in touch, is really quite intelligent BUT .....

I mentioned yesterday I was putting new tyres on the car, it's been handling like crap and I wanted to eliminate them. They had only 3mm tops on anyway. Obviously it's bad everywhere but even when cleared up they are poo!

ANYWAY, she quite rightfully said "don't they have to be run in as they can have a coating on them" (to be honest I can't remember if this is true or an old wife's tale), so I said "it's ok they put them in tyre warmers like on F1 cars, it also helps with the snow". She said "yeah that makes sense".

    I'm sorry I couldn't resist!

    I am really miserable now!

Got there @12 have two front tyres fitted, alignment done and rear bushes done. Took a little while but was all done for 2PM. Then went to back the car off the ramp and the car wouldn't budge.

Passenger side rear caliper has seized, pads where nearly all gone. So having a new caliper and pads fitted tomorrow. Just got home after a long walk.

Hopefully parts will be there tomorrow. £230 bill for tyres now likes to be ultimately nearer £500.

    Very upset!

But the brakes weren't seized before you got there I assume?
Sorry if I come across as being paranoid or slightly pessimistic, but....

Brakes tend to sieze through excess heat so how the heck does that happen while a car is up on ramps, not even moving?
When mine seized on the Westfield, all I needed to do was remove the pot seal, drop in a little oil and replace the seal again. Just as well because the front callipers are Ford Cortina and impossible to get hold of.

You trust these guys not to be drumming up extra trade?
Did I ever mention the CAT on my 306 which a certain well known tyre/exhaust/battery place damaged when I asked them to replace a simple broken bracket? Couldn't prove a thing because the exhaust was nosey before it went it, but when I rerturned to pick up my car they'd already drawn up a CAT quote for £400.

No I saw it all, we think it seized as they put the brakes on to do the alignment check, just lock them on to alter the alignment. Unfortunately after that, that caliper didn't release. I was literally backing it out, or trying to!

Pads were all but gone and they couldn't wind it back in. They were prepared to remove the shim to allow me to get home (literally just round the corner), which they did whilst attempting to locate the part. It was moving but it wouldn't have lasted.

Just one of those moments where you have to literally bend over, drop your trousers and ......

I was going to be driving a 140 mile trip down the motorway tomorrow. What's to say it didn't lock up if I had to brake hard. So in some respects I'm grateful.

Sounds to me as if the handling problem might have been caused by the caliper locking up. If as you say the pads were shot, that does not happen overnight but will be gradual. If one side was sticking it could cause the handling to be off, as in effect you were driving with the brake constantly applied to one wheel

Had exactly the same thought, it has had it's bushes done, brand new quality tyres on. Good tread pattern.

If this thing doesn't handle 100% better I'll eat my hat.

Right now I'm crying into my empty wallet, but hopefully it'll be better tomorrow. These are all regular service parts that you expect to pay out for (ok not so much the caliper), so we'll see after tomorrow.

The car would be almost undriveable, it would pull to one side when driving along and pull the opposite way when you brake, you'd get a strong smell of burning from that wheel, in extreme cases the wheel would heat up so much that it could damage the tyre or even cause a blow out.
