Ex police vectra display problems

Just bought a 55 plate 3.2 gsi estate (non facelift) which is an ex police car. The trader i bought it from has installed some cheapo single din stereo as it didnt come with any stereo, only probs i cannot control the display from the steering wheel as the buttons dont do anything ie cant change between functions it just displays time date and temp. What do i need to do to be able to control the display from the steering wheel controls?

most car radio shops sell a special box of tricks that plugs in to allow wheel controls to work as controls go through the genuine radio

You may have the basic disply as the car is just a low spec model that they say is gsi engine and suspension only. You may need tech 2 to switch the function on.

Ok cheers, will take it to dealer to tech2 it, does that just mean it needs activating and the controls will work then or will I still need to get a stalk etc to make the sterring wheel controls work?
