Default 2.2 direct - guess the fault!

Unfortunately, my Vectra died a slow and protracted death last Weds in the snow.

In fairness I probably never should have left the house but....

On start up in the morning, the ABS light wouldn't go out. Car still stopped, but ABS definitely not working, as tested by me in the snow.

Then after a 1.5hr 15 miles crawl in aforementioned snow, the Car/Spanner warning light lit up and remained on, and wouldn't go out. At no point did the car appear to have a fault, so I ignored it and carried onto work.

At 5.30, I left work, ABS light still on, but no other warning lights, so I set off, got about 100yds from the works car park, before first the car/spanner, then the engine warning light came on, then it appeared to loose 2 cylinders and then go into limp mode.

I was able to stop, turn off and restart, but now even on idle it was running rough and wouldn't rev past about 3000rpm. I decided to turn around and drive back to work where it was at least warm, and the car limped along in 2nd at about 15mph and would go any harder.

RAC were called and RAC man tried a selection of cures, including blowing out the Mass air sensor, inspecting the coil pack for shorts, then getting the laptop out and progressively unplugging sensors under the bonnet.

Long and short of it is, he couldn't find any fault codes on the laptop, and the warning lights for the engine had gone out, but symptoms remain, it will idle, but if you rev it, it sounds like only 2 cylinders are firing. He deduced it was probably the manifold cat that had broken up and was now blocking half the exhaust, which seems possible imo.

Car recovered to local Vaux dealer on Thursday where it remains, with techs scratching there heads as Tech2 throws up no faults at all.

They have fixed the ABS fault - needed a new wheel hub.

They agree there is a problem with the engine, but with no codes showing, they are resorting to replacing parts to see if one of them cures the issue. So far, new coil pack and new fuel pump, still same problem.

So I thought I'd throw it open to suggestion here for any ideas. I'll update with whatever i can find out in the meantime.

Car is 57 plate, 2yrs 3mths old, 2.2 direct manual. 72000miles. This is the first fault (major or minor) its had since the power steering failed at 1 week old.

Mine did the same on xmas eve....it's a 2.2 non direct
Did the exact same as yours......had it towed to the dealers and they said the
fuel pump had broken up inside the tank and partly blocked the fuel line....hence running on 2 cylinders as was running lean.
Then as I drove mine back home (about a mile) with the EML flashing it took out the coil pack......o2 sensor....and the CAT!
It cost just over a grand with diagnostics check, labour and parts!!!!!
Had it back and runs better than ever....EML came back on again and the after CAT o2 sensor needs changing as well!!!!!!
I'm no expert as i asked for help on here when it 1st happened......but may help yer?

Mmm hadn't thought about that?? I work for a major snack foods company, maybe I could rustle up something for whoever guesses right!

Looking through other 2.2 issues on here, I'm relieved this is a company car and I'm not footing the bill, whatever it is, a large bill seems to be di rigour.

However, I'm more bothered about getting my car back and out of the crap 1.6 Focus hire car I've got - bloomin' tin can van!

Dohhhh, should read the threads a bit more careful, thought you had a diesel. The bit mentioning changing a coil pack should have indicated that it was a petrol.

Well, got the call back from the dealer today to collect my car.

They say it was the High Pressure Fuel pump failure, causing lean running and thus sounding like running on 2 cylinders. Replacement appears to have cured issue.

Downside of a lease car is they don't give you any paperwork when you collect the car so not easy to see exactly what was done, though curiously the Service Manager mentioned that a deal had been struck between Lex Autolease and Vauxhall, for vaux to fund some of the cost of repair. Another instance of a Vauxhall known issue, but not wanting to admit it??? Or just the clout of the UK's largest lease company to keep them sweet??

So guess thats a congrats to Wanna Veccy and Benny.

I'm off to Manchester tomorrow, so hopefully there will be no further issues on route.
