    Question CDTI 120 economy/advice

    Hi guys,

Due to 120 miles commuting every day I'm looking to trade my petrol Astra in for a Vectra Estate CDTI (the 120bhp 8 valve version). 90% of my journey is on motorways or fast A roads. Can anyone let me know the kind of economy I'm likely to get? I don't drive fast (60-70mph on motorways).

My budget is around £4500 so it looks like I should be able to pick up a 2005/06 model with around 80,000 miles. I appreciate that all cars have problems, but how reliable is this engine/car? Is there anything that I should look out for?

    Thanks in advance.

I haven't had any trouble with my 120. I regularly drive to Sheffield from Kent and can get there and back With a few journeys whilst up there on a tank and I am a bit heavy on the right hand pedal.

i had a 1.9td life, When i used to go down to yarmouth, mainly A roads and dual carriage way, i could go down for the week, with three bikes on the back, driver round for a week (mainly town) and come back, which would be about 650 miles to a tank, I now have 1.9sri 150, but yet to have a normal week to see how it compares.

BTW all 1.9s are not equel, my dad has one and he on average got 70 miles less to tank than me and he has no bikes, he's had his car checked over by vauxhall

I have an 07 1.9 120BHP and on a decent run I can get around 52mpg out of it, depending on how much of a rush I'm in. With the cruise control and smooth acceleration out of roundabouts, junctions etc, I can see someone getting even better than this

Again, very impressed with mine, 60 mile round trip to work, 90% Motorway like yourself and I get around 550 to a tank (150 cdti). On a run to Cumbria from S.Wales I managed 640.

The 120 is a pretty reliable engine, only really the DMF and EGR to cause you problems (not including Vectra specific faults i.e. springs, bushes, wiper linkages etc...). On that journey I would expect you to get around 45-55mpg on that kind of run, dependant on traffic. I find setting the cruise control on motorways at 67mph (on the clock) offers me the best mpg (CDTi 150).

Ill give that a go, I always set at 70. Be interesting to see what difference it makes.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm currently averaging 39mpg in my Astra (1.8 petrol auto estate) so you can see I drive smoothly!

Good to hear the 120 engine is reliable. I'm not bothered about performance (economy and running costs are far more important), so the 120 versions looks to be the one to go for.

Myself, 150 all the way. No probs but judging by the general consencus, perhaps 120 is the way to go for you.
