Default Spark plug change? K&N filter clean?

I've had my car for 3 years now and have done 35k without changing the spark plugs. I assumed they were done with the service just before I bought it.

A few years ago I would do them every year, but was told I'd be wasting my money changing them that often now.

Is it time for new ones? Any recommendation for the plugs for a 1.8 petrol?

Additionally, I put a K&N panel filter in about 15k ago and haven't touched it since. I know the manufacturers claim you don't need to clean it until about 50k, is this really true? I've not had the airbox off to check...

never touch the K&N till you hit the 50,000 miles, the oil they use takes some real shifting, so when you re-oil, its too easy to go over the top with it

I have always cleaned my K&N panel on a yearly basis regardless of the mileage, always handy to have a paper filter spare for the occaison... clean properly take time to dry it & don't over oil.

Cool, I'll check the filter and get some new plugs.

Any recommendations? Not got too much to spend, but don't want anything that's going to wear out too quickly.
