Exclamation petrol in a diesel engine!!

I made a silly mistake today and filled up £1.12 of petrol by accident but then filled up half a tank with dieselstraight after that went to my local garage to double check everythings ok and they told me its actually good for the diesel engine to mix a little petrol with diesel from time to time, Is this true or will it still do some sort of damage to my engine??
    Thanks

I wouldn't say it will do any good to your engine. As you have a high pressure common rail, running on petrol WILL cause damage. However, as you put such a small amount in, it is unlikely to do so.

I would have filled the tank completely with diesel though.

It's about a litre at today's prices (1 3/4 pints). You put about 25 times more than this in diesel so you've a ratio of about 25:1 diesel to petrol worst case which isn't likely to bother things too much in the short term. The biggest fear is for the pump to lose lubrication - there should still be plenty.

That will be fine, I stuck £56.00 worth of petrol in a Kia Sorento once it drove about 2 mails on the A14 then cost the company (lol) £350.00 for the tow in charge drain and flush the tank and new filter, they then put £50.00 worth of diesel in it £456.00 not bad for a silly mistake !!!
