Arrow Should I change oil grade?

    Hi there,

It's time to change the oil on the Veccy and just recently after doing a fair amount of millage in one day the oil light came on, so I had to pull into the services to check - the engine was almost empty!

I had no leak. I used 5W30 last time, is my 2.0 DTI heavy on the oil?

I'm wondering whether to go for a different viscosity this time - what do you think?

    Vehicle : vectra-c

    Trim : sri

    Engine : cdti

    Year : 2004

    Mileage : 98,000

you have a 02 rg 2.0 dti, whats the mileage?, i used to use normal 15/40 diesel oil and never had a problem for 136k, its not always the oil but a matter of keeping the levels right, changing it early and treating it with respect, ive had lots of high mileage vx diesels and used to only put comma turbo diesel plus in (was only b3 grade which is ok for MOST diesels not having dpf which yours does not have) you can get this from morrisons for about £8 and change it every 5-6k its cheeper and you have cean oil in all the time, i have also done 10k on a regular basis with this oil. just as reasurance for you i put 5/30 for 5-6k then 15/40 in for the next 5/6k i my cdti so 15/40 wont hurt your dti as ive also done 10k with 15/40 oil also.

    Planning, planning, and planning
Prior to a long journey ALWAYS check the levels before, especially on a diesel
I find it very difficult to believe the engine would have used 1 litre in one day (the capacity between maximum and minimum)
If so, there is a serious issue that needs rectifying

    How long since last service?
You can use pretty much any synthetic oil you want, as the car is out of warranty
Don't go any lower than 10W40

Personally, I would use the grade and standard specified in the manual.

You won't go wrong with that. As to make of oil, up to you.

It's a 52 plate and has 79K on the clock! Sounds interesting I may try something slightly different. I managed to get Casterol 5W30 last time for a bargain, think it cost £14 for 4/5 litres.

Yeah you are probably right - well I don't mean to say it used it up just that day. I think the pressures didn't exactly help and it was apparent after this journey as the warning light came on then.

It's been 7K miles since the last service. So its getting ready for some fresh oil, just waiting for the snow to melt!!

When you said the oil light came on, which do you mean the Oil Level Sensor or the oil pressure warning light?
