Incorrectly wired intermittent wipers?

Hi all,

I've not checked the manual but, unless I'm being a bit thick, I would have expected that the smaller the bar (ie to the left) the shorter the delay, the longer the bar (ie to the right), the longer the delay. Mine is wired up the other way round and I am just wondering if this is a Vx 'standard', or if it's pot luck?

This was also the case on my previous Volvo and Daewoo, so am I mistaken or just plain unlucky? Also, is it possible to correct this and get them wired correctly?

i believe the intermittent setting is rain sensitive, mine is anyway. and i always thought the bars are how sensitive it is.

Ollie. Mine behaves in the same way, ie move to right for less delay between wipes. This is the norm.

As every car you've had was the same as this, I think you are reading it wrongly. Bigger bars = more swipes per minute....

If you have rain-sensitive wipers, they are less sensitive with the lever over to the left and more sensitive with it over to the right.

If you don't have rain-sensitive wipers, the delay between wipes is longer with the lever over to the left and shorter with it over to the right.

I thought rain sensitive ones didn't have the "level" on top at all? You set them to intermittant and the rain sensor controls the speed?

mine are rain sensitive and have the dial on top

The controller on the top is for the intermittent control of the rear & to control the rain sensor.

Yep to the right on a non-sensing car is for quicker wipes...

Yes they do, as already posted it changes how sensitive the sensor is.

I don't have rain-sensitive wipers. There are (just) 4 settings in all and they adjust the intermittent timing of the wipers front and back (if it's on).

I guessed that this would be 'as expected' and I guess I'll have to accept the 'bigger bars'='more wipes' reasoning. Displays and controls always run from L-R or clockwise so I guess what they mean then is that when there's a big gap, even though the actual speed of the wipers in operation is the same, the rate is 'slower' and that when there's a shorter gap between wipes the rate is 'faster'.

Thing is, I consider myself to be a logical person and personally I'd argue that it's non-intuitive and doesn't make any sense. When talking about intermittent wipe, I've always perceived the marking to be referring to the gap rather than the rate. I would guess that the original thinking behind this comes from the US(?); maybe their brains work differently, or is it just me that thinks this is a bit odd?
