Default Driver side wheel no good in the snow!!

With all the snow and ice around its obviously been very difficult to drive in but i've found it particular diffcult as I live in a valley and there are many hills. I struggle getting up many of them which confuses me sometimes when I see other cars getting up and my car is a SRI 1.9CDTi 150bhp. One thing that a few people have mentioned to me is that when my car is stucking in the snow/ice, the passenger side wheel is trying to drive the car while the driver side wheel doesn't move at all...

Does anyone know why that is and is it normal??

    Cheers,
    Ian

Dunno about drivers side, but im having trouble getting up even slight gradients at the moment.

A closer look at tyres tells me why, the tread pattern (across the tyre) is too narrow, it fills with snow, which then melts, freezes to ice and turns my tyres into slicks.

I imagine that most tyres designed for long distance "touring" and going to suffer the same fate. They're designed for minimum rolling resistance on dry roads.....

The Vectra, very large car, but not as heavy as it seems.... So it just sits on top of the snow going nowhere.

I definitely buying winter tyres if I still have the car come next winter.

Mine is useless in the snow! unless I get a run up it just stops with the wheels spinning, even on flat ground. Managed to get 160 out of the speedo without moving!!

I've got the 19" Snowflakes (oh the irony) with Michelin Pilot's and it just can't get grip.

It seems that either wheel spins, just depends on which loses traction first. If I hit a space where a car had been parked when the snow fell etc, unless I get both wheels on, the wheel on the snow spins and nothing from the wheel on the tarmac. It may just be coincidence that one spins more than the other - but try the above to confirm - get your passenger side wheel on some exposed tarmac, and the drivers side on some snow/ice. The drivers side should spin even though the other would have traction - lack of a limited slip diff.

Mines the CDTI 150 as well and other, much more basic old cars seem to be coping so much better!

Will that make any difference on a 35 profile? the profile is so low, I can;t see it would make much difference?

    That observation is correct
The OSF wheel does not spin, only the NSF
