Default Looking for some AV advice.

My Telly blew up on boxing day so treated myself to THIS little puppy. My old Sony was 8 years old so was silver as was the trend back then. I had the full deck, the Sony Video, Sony DVD player, separate Sony 5.1 surround sound system and even a Sony Sky box before I got Sky+. Now all this stuff was analogue, so connected via scart or in the case of the surround sound 6 separate leads (one for each channel) to the DVD player.

So now I have the Toshiba with Full HD capability, which is connected to my PS3 via HDMI cable. So that's the picture sorted Its just the sound that needs sorting now. I want 5.1 again but all the systems I've seen are either a cinema system with DVD built in, 2.1 systems or pay hundreds for top end 5.1 separates. All I'm after is a good 5.1 stand alone like my old set up as the PS3 sorts the picture.

    Any ideas guys?

MY dads just bought a samsung home cinema thingy with the dvd player in to go with his samsung tele, And you can still route the sound through it as if it were just speakers, you dont have to be using the dvd at the time

The PS3 comes with an Optical Out for audio and this is for a higher quality speaker system. TV's typically dont have 5.1 outlets - none that I have seen, and usually if they do its to produce a 2 pairs of stereo - if you get what I mean.

Im affrais you may have to pay top dollar for what you are looking for.

Here is a system I found - Digital Speakers for PS3

Here are the specifications - http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/sp...ction=features

Hope this is what you are looking for as this is a the root im going down for with my PS3 for sound.

Yea that sort of thing, my telly has optical output so i presume anything thats put into the telly like PS3, Sky ect goes out via the optical and into a receiver. I've found a few things on Richer sounds that looks promising, but you but the AV receiver separate to your speakers.

the yamaha av365 would do a perfect job ( the 465 is slightly better an about 40 quid more - shop - super-fi ), the sound quality is soo much better out of a separates system, i've had it for years... now that hdmi is out I need to change my av amp and pump everything through it

I have a 5.1 system for my PC, set me back £250 and it's absolutely brilliant.

The home cinema stuff however is priced to aim at the sort of idiots who by gold plated HDMI, scart or whatever cables.

If I really wanted a home cinema system id buy a good PC speaker kit and do some fancy wiring/soldering work to get it plugged into my TV. For the money you'd get a far better sound quality then the other option.

as previously said, you could do a lot worse than get a Yamaha AV (something like RXV-365) and a semi-decent 5.1 speaker package to go with it. £400-500 would do it easily and for that you will have an impressive system.

i've got the RXV-359 and the Wharfedale Diamond 9 HCP - and it sounds awesome.

have a scout round on the superfi site to get some ideas.

I recon I can get the speakers for a right bargain. My old man is the paint supplier to Wharfedale, so its just the AV unit really. The Yamaha's do look a good bit of kit for the money though, think i'll pop down to Richer Sounds and have a play.

EDIT: Just rang the old man and apparently Wharfdale got bought out by the chinese a while ago so he no longer has any contact with them

they've got a superfi in leeds... definitely go there too!

    http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/pages.cfm/id/38

you can get the diamond 9 hcp for £350 online. sounds a lot but this was 500 originally and rated 5 star in what hifi.

    http://audioaffair.co.uk/index.php?a...de89c5f38b605f

mind you richer sounds have got the 365 for £150... that's a steal!

    http://www.richersounds.com/product/...ama-rxv365-blk

so that's a top package for £500. just need some decent speaker cable for fronts and centre and some reasonable cable for the rears.

oh and never spend a lot on HDMI or optical cables. it's a digital signal, so they are all the same and don't let anyone tell you differently lol! analogue cables are where you notice the difference.

I wouldn't even walk into that place lol..... It looks more like a mobile phone shop and they even look like the smugg phone salesmen that work in them, ready to pounce on unsuspecting technophobes!

All that glam doesn't really impress someone like me, it just makes me suspicious. Which is probably why I buy all my tech online now after hours of reading reviews and forums
