    Default Which engine oil???

Can anyone clear up my misunderstanding of engine oil specifications?

I'm trying to find the right oil for my 3.0 V6 diesel but there's a mine field of specs! The manual says the oil must meet ACEA A3/B3 on one page, then GM-LL-B-025 on the next.

I spoke to the dealer earlier who told me to use 10W-40 Semi-synthetic but the top up bottle I picked up that meets the above specs is fully-synthetic!

To confuse matters even more I went to the Castrol website and put in my reg. number and it told me to use 0W-30 but didn't mention if it was part or fully synth It did however list the Vauxhall specific GM-LL-B-025 spec.

I decided I wanted to use Magnatec 10W-40 cos we don't get the temperature range in the UK to warrant using 5W-30 or anything thinner. But I realised I'm then limited to 10,000 miles between oil changes whereas 0/5W-30 is good for 20,000 (I've done 12,000 in the last 10 months) in accordance with GM-LL-B-025 but they don't do it in Magnatec.

SO.......It looks like it's going to be 5W-30 ACEA A3/B3 GM-LL-B-025!!! The question is......FULLY OR PART SYNTHETIC?????

    Cheers,

    Jon.

No, the 3.0 needs 5w-30 fully synthetic. It's more expensive than the 10W - 40 but with that engine I wouldn't risk anything else.

I kinda figured this was the case Wardy. Can you recommend a particular oil? Castrol recommend 0W-30, at least it's the only one with the GM-LL-B-25 rating. They do a 5W-30 but it only has a VW rating. either way, pricey!

    Doesn't matter, 5W-30 ACEA-B3 GM-LL-B-025 is what matters.

Specification is everything, leave it to the oil chemists how they make it.

You speak much sense Big Sig. I haven't checked but I'd like to think VX oil will be slightly cheaper than Castrol etc.

    Vehicle : Opel Signum

    Trim : Sport

    Engine : 3.0 CDTI

    Year : 12/03

I use Vx 5w30 in my 3.0CDTi and I find the engine noisy when it's warmed up ie. oil is thinner. I think I might use Mobil 1 5w50 for the next change. It meets GM standards.
