Default Hi from a new Vectra estate owner

    Hi guys & gals,

If you'd have told me two weeks ago that I was going to buy a Vauxhall Vectra I'd have been more than a little surprised! However, when my 2000 Volvo S80 developed two electrical faults that were going to cost £1K to fix, one of which meant I couldn't lock the car overnight without the alarm going off, I decided to put the money (and the car!) towards a replacement and started looking for a new car ASAP. I knew I wanted a diesel estate for space and economy, so being the geek I am, I drew up a weighted feature chart for all the main cars on the market to see what would most suit me. To my surprise the top three were: Ford Mondeo, Vauxhall Vectra, Volkswagon Passat. I also decided that I would buy the vehicle from the Car Shop in Northampton as it was close, they have a lot of cars to chose from and I could easily trade in my old vehicle (they didn't even look at it!). They didn't have any Mondeos, the Passat has a smaller boot and some weird electric hand-brake (no HB turns in that!) so the Vectra won almost by default.

I test-drove mine and a TDi Elite but the ride was (surprisingly) better in the sports-suspension SRi! The Elite had plenty of nice extras included heated leather seats (though they were tan coloured ) had lower mileage but was also therefore a bit more expensive. For the looks, ride and price I ended up buying the Vectra SRi 1.9 estate pictured in my avatar on 2nd Jan.

So far, I love it! It's got 82K miles on the clock, though the service book says it had a new engine at 20K miles!

There's a few of the features that I had on the Volvo, and loads that were on the Elite, missing from the SRi but I think I can live with them all. I like the darkened rear windows and just need to fit my parrot MK6100 and adjust the seat properly and I'll be very happy.

I am wondering if anyone knows if I can easily replace the basic main roof-lining courtesy light module with a new/breaker-supplied Elite (or other higher-spec model) one with map lights and storage compartment? Just wondering if it's a common connector/wiring loom or if there won't be any connections for the other lights on my loom...

A little about me - I'm married with a 2 year old lad and a 16 year old daughter, a computer programmer by trade, like the outdoors and am a Scout Instructor (caving, climbing, walking, powerboating). Also do a bit of DIY in the house and garden. Have enjoyed all the Pratchett books, enojy most types of music and love my home cinema.

It's nice to find this great resource of people and information, I think you'll prove invaluable over the next few years! I've already posted in the dodgy wipers when cold thread...

    Cheers,

    Ollie

    Thanks for all the welcomes!

Cheers to John35 for pointing me in the right direction. I'll see how much the main stealers want, just checked eBay - £52 inc delivery for a new one from LMF, £37.50 for a private, used one (oh, without map lights and complete with dirty fingerprints). Will check breakers too...

Just need to do the rear interior light addition mod, upgrade to auto-dipping mirror (which I see is also on eBay) and leccy rear windows (might be a bit more involved!) .

One question - on all the "how tos" it doesn't mention disconnecting the battery, is the Vectra 'funny' about having lights etc. unplugged whilst the battery is connected? My Volvo used to get its knickers in a twist and enable the "check airbag" warning light if you so much as sneezed without disconnecting the battery, resulting in a £50 trip to the stealer. I don't want to get in a similar situation with this car!

    Thanks!

if in doubt disconnect the battery. Won't do any harm to the car and won't harm you if something goes wrong.
