    Default More Problems

Took my car out this morning (2006 cdti 150bhp) and noticed a slight whine from under to bonnet which is worse when under load, after a few minute the temp was up to over 95deg. Pulled the car over right away, opened the bonnet and there was steam and a burning smell coming from around the cambelt area.

From searching to forum sounds like it could be the water pump and or a tensioner. Does this sound possible or is it more likely to be something else. The car has done 160k and had its first cam belt a 80k.

as it was still running (albeit noisy) then I would doubt that it is the belt or tensioner. Most likely the water pump which isn't timing belt driven on CDTi

Car is still running fairly normally just gets hot very quick. What belt does the water pump run from?

Hi. The water pump is run off the cambelt. Its not driven from the toothed side of the belt but the other smooth side. I have just changed mine with the cambelt. Check the 'how to's' on changing the cambelt and you can see exactly where the waterpump is.

Oh i see, that how too makes it very clear, i will take the cover off and have a closer inspection but think I will leave the rest to a mechanic as it looks a little much for my skills.

    Exclamation

    Hi,
If the water pump wasn't changed along with the first cam-belt change (highly recommended action) I would suggest its definately the pump whats gone, and is attributing to the temperature etc your seeing. The temp isn't the problem though it's the fact that the pump's pully does drive the came belt (as already mentioned). I suggest not running the car at all because if it does fail it could quite easily drop the belt off and wreck your engine....
Suggest you get a new pump and cam belt kit fitted asap mate.

I would agree with what has been said. Remove the covers and see if the pump is leaking / working etc. I wouldn't drive it either until I know what the problem is. Stat malfunction could be another reason for overheating but not steam or smells. It may be that the pump has seized and the belt burning is the smell.....

To remove the cam cover is quite a time consuming job as you have to remove the complete engine undertray. Then support the engine with a jack and remove the engine mount before the cam cover will come off. By this time you might aswell carry on and change the waterpump/cambelt as you are at least a third of the way into the process.

The cover isn't in 2 parts like on other engines? That's not what I expected....
