Default 3.0 V6 diesel problem & Auto box question.

    Hi all,

I have a recurring problem with my 3.0 V6 diesel. After approx 30 to 40 miles on the motorway during my daily commute, I get an oil warning light on the tacho warning panel. Ths originally happened about 12 months ago when VX told me it was low oil level. I checked the oil level and it was fine so they said it's probably jusy a faulty sensor and not to worry about it too much. Soon afetr I had a full service done and the problem dissapeared.

Well it came back about 6 weeks ago. Still under the impression the light warns of low oil level, I checked the oil and it was low, so I topped it up and the problem went again.

A few days later and it's back again! I have recently moved so I phoned an independant Vauxhall specialist/franchise near to my new home who told me it's a low oil pressure, not level warning. Now the hand book makes this out to be a big deal, as in stop engine immediately and phone for recovery !! The guy on the phone said not to get too excited about it, probably just the oil thickening up he said (so much for the 5W-30 long life oil I asked the stealer to put in last service!).

Has anyone else had this problem? I'm worried now that I may be damaging the engine. It's due a service next month so maybe an oil change will help but past experience suggests not. Also I was concerned about how much oil the car used over the last 10 or so months. I put in just shy of 2 litres, is this normal?

One final question regarding the auto box. Service manual suggests the ATF hasn't been topped up previously. They want £70 to do it, bit steep for a top up I think, however, in the same breath they said it's not important even though the service guide says it's required. Any thoughts?

Thanks for any help on this one guys, could do with putting my mind at ease!

    Cheers,

    Jon.

My 3.0 CDTi Siggy did this once, on a French Autoroute. I stopped as soon as I could and checked the oil, and it was fine. I restarted and the warning went away -and it's been fine ever since.
I suspect a dodgy sensor somewhere, but it's never done it since

Oil level and oil pressure are different lights. So which one do you actually have? yellow oil can or red (!) ????
Now I need a turbo to keep up!

Cheers guys, just popped into a different dealer and they confirmed it was oil level. The level is OK so probably a dicky sensor. Wondering how much of a job it is to change myself.

Would like to do an oil and filter change to but can't find a how 2 for the 3.0 V6 Diesel. Maybe I'll have to do the how 2 myself!!

Oil filter change on the 3.0CDTi is a pig job If you decide to do it yourself, remove the filter first and then the oil. You don't want to end up like me, leaving the old filter in with fresh oil

i disagree! its very straight forward, i change my oil on my V6 every 6,000 miles and have never had a prob removing the filter or sump plug?? be prepared though on the y30dt it takes 7.9 litres of oil and if you buy the oil filter from vx it will be around £45.00!!!!! you can get them from ebay(aftermarket) for £20 delivered though.hope this helps

Try buying three or more, that should take it to about £25 each

It's a straight forward job only if you have special tools for the filter. Y30DT takes 7.5L of oil

    My handbook says 7.25 Litres
However, at every service they have used 8 litres
I did query why they didn't use 7 litres, and apparently 7 litres takes it to just about half way between the MIN and MAX on dipstick
Adding the extra 1 litre would take it to just above the MAX, but they reckon they only use about 800ml
