    Default engine temp gauge

how long does it take for you gauge to show a reading. I've got a 57 plate vectra 1.9 D SRI drove to work this morning (very cold!) and in the 20min it took the temp gauge did not go up! Only had the car a few days!

    Was the heater working OK?

If heat is coming out of the vents, then I wouldn't worry. Diesels take a long time to fully warm due to them being more effecicent at converting fuel to motion and also there is quite a lot of metal to warm too. Heat loss to ambient will also be high due to the cold weather.

Mine is barely moving in this weather (1.8 petrol). It just about touched 60 by the time I got to work after a 30min drive.

TBH, I wouldn't worry about it, but if it still doesn't get warm when the weather gets a bit warmer then it may need investigating. Does it get fully warm when in traffic etc?

I had the same thing with my 1.8 Vectra, I would drive journeys of up to 30 mins to get to work / gfs house and the temp guage wouldn't leave the bottom. So either my car had the same problems as yours or it's not a problem.

However my 2.0T Siggy warms up a lot faster, 5mins is enough to at least move it from the bottom to 80.

Must be a veccy thing, mines being doing that for the last couple of years, somedays i can drive in to work and it won't move and other days it will move. I reckon in theory if you left her running long enough it would eventually start to rise, i wouldn't worry about it though

On 1.8s the temp gauge should start to raise after about 4/5 miles and then sit on at least 85 and go to 90 (that being half way up the scale) in traffic, even in this weather. But mine only did this after changing the thermostate last year before that it would not go above 70. The temperature rating on the new thermstate was 92. The job of the therm' is to open and close according to the engine temp so as to maintain a steady and correct engine temp, so if this is not happening you could have a faulty thermostate. On 1.8s the change is a very simple job.
