I have a Passat with the same engine & have found it a fantastic drive.
It has much less turbo lag than other turbo diesels Ive driven so it feels effortless to drive & smooth, there is a big slug of torque available from about 1500rpm onwards.
When putting your foot down the exhaust note is surprisingly sporty, with a beefy sounding snarl rising to a nice howl as the revs rise.
The downside is that it has a particulate filter on the exhaust which is not really suitable for continuous short or start stop journeys, so if this is your usual mileage go for the 140 instead.
Due to this tuning the engine is also not easy as it can mess up the filter (although there are companies that will do it). I have never felt this necessary as there is easily enough power to have the tc light blinking in 1st & second plus third and even 4th if the road is wet & you floor it.
I'm doing 220ish miles a week from £25 diesel which involves motorway driving in the morning and very heavy traffic on my way home at night. The Golf should do a bit more.
Hope this helps mate
Here's some pics mate.
My opinion of the car has not diminished.

Many thanks!, i really wanted the 170 but do short journeys, I'm keen on the dsg box as i get fed up with stop start and speed humps, ill have to make a reasonable journey once a week or so to clean it out if that's the case.
