    The Airbox 'mod'

In the lower section of a Vectra C air filter housing you will find a detachable guide section of the air inlet trunking.
If you look at the standard paper air filter element of an Vectra C (which has done a few miles) which still has this section fitted, you will see that only one section of the filter element appears to show blackening/contamination.
Popular practice is to remove the detachable section so as to allow a less restricted airflow into the lower section of the air filter housing, with the intention of permitting an improved airflow through a greater surface area of the filter element thus permitting 'improved breathing' of the engine.
In practice an air filter housing without the detachable guide section fitted will show a standard paper filter element with far more evenly distributed blackening/contamination, thus displaying that the incoming airflow is far less restricted than with the detachable section in place.
Commonly felt 'improvements' include a smoother running engine, faster pickup (engine response to throttle input) and reduction/elimination of flatspot (particularly in deisels).
A common addition to this 'mod' is the replacement of the standard paper air filter element with a 'fabric'type filter element such as manufactered by K&N.

I am wondering what the purpose of this guide section in the airbox is. Is it purely to reduce noise or (looking at the shape) would it increase airflow speed? On my 2.2 I have also removed this section but it seems I am now getting less MPG.

think it was to improve motorway mpg at speed but around town you should now see a difference in mpg as in increase, when i done mine it reduced the flat spot greatly and smoothed out the torque boost, still to try an aftermarket filter as well. Also is your car full canbus if so it will auto learn change to airbox after a good few miles and then you will notive the diff. If not you will need to reset th ecu.

give it a few miles mate,, when I took the trumpet out and fitted a fram air filter I had quite a drop in mpg, but am now getting more mpg than before, I think the ECU took a while to adjust on my car, some say to remove the battery lead to re-set the ecu. in my car its smoother, quicker pick up and generaly better to drive. but have not done a long Mway drive ,,yet
