Good car hire deals?

it looks like we're off to the South of France in September.
Since it's too far to drive for a short break (Carcasonne), we'll need a hire car.
Anyone know any good deals going? I used to have all kinds of discounts through various credit cards, but I don't seem to have anything these days..

I used LastMinute.Com's deal. Were very good and only took 5 mins with paperwork at the other end.

Hi Phil,

I flew into Carcasonne last Summer for me hols and went with Hertz.

They were ok, but billed me an extra £300 IIRC.

The car was fine - Pug 307 SW HDi and did over 900KM.

Can't remember how much it totalled now - doesn't help I know but just check when you get back home what you've been billed for!!!!!!!!!!!

i just realized that I can get 15% discount with Holiday Autos with my Virgin One account, so that's a good starting point. I've use HA before without problems.

I got a Fiesta through Hertz for £225 (prepaid - it's cheaper) when we had 12 days in Italy last month. Thought that was reasonable as Italy is usually dear for car hire.

Another thing I found was the following website: www.insurance4carhire.com. If you pay a yearly premium of about £52, they cover you for car hire damage excess. The super collision damage waver was going to work out at approx £160 for my hired Fiesta, so I took out this policy instead. I didn't need it in the event, but cheap peace of mind, I'd say. Covers you for a full year, as well, so don't need to take it out again if you go abroad again within the year.
