Thumbs down How not to break down on the motorway.

Incredible. En route to work this morning an older black VW Passat passes me at about a ton in the outside lane. Up the road he's boxed out in the outside lane and I catch him. Then the lane frees up but instead of setting off again, he slows......and slows... and slows..... at 30 mph he brakes (in the outside lane) and stops.

I'm now stuck in the outside lane of a motorway at the start of rushhour with cars passing at 70+ on the inside. I decide to put my hazards on 'cause the traffic flow means I can't go round him. At first I thought he was trying to wind me up but I hadn't done anything (I Thought). So after 20-30 Seconds of sitting there I flash the lights. No Responce after a minute or two I feel no choice but to toot the horn as I'm feeling a little vunrable.

Then he gets out. Oh..oh....I thought, Then He looks under the car finally gestures that he has a problem which I acknowledge and then he puts his hazards on. NOW YOU TELL ME! I thought!"

After another 30 seconds he then pulls off and tootles in the outside for a mile or so at 30mph. Then the penny drops and he pulls over to Lane 1.

Why oh Why if he had a problem did he not move over to the hard shoulder when He had the oppotunity instead of parking in the outside lane. Sooo Scary being stuck there with all that traffic getting bigger and bigger in my mirrors in the outside lane.

Still alls well that ends well!

what a pillock!.. that could have been disastrous for more than just the two of you especially as you were still in your vehicle. jeez, the slightest hint of anything wrong and i'm off the the inside lane as was the case a few weeks ago..

    You're a lucky man today..

It just goes to show the poor standard of driving and also of common sense that some people have. More than inconsiderate, it is downright dangerous.

I think that to use motorways, drivers should have to take a separate specific test on how to use them safely and properly. This would also reduce congestion and journey times, as people wouldn't do stupid things (like^^^^)

You cannot beleive that someone would slow down & grind to a halt in the outside lane, how stupid & dangerous.

I've seen someone stop with a flat tyre, also in the outside lane.

I don't know about you guys but I'd fight tooth & nail to drag the car off the main lanes if I had to.

I'd at least go for the hazards and let the traffic know I had a problem then I'd hope they'd make it easy to get over to the hard shoulder while I still had enough speed to do so.

Exactly, you could coast across, even with a flat you could easily get the car out of the way.

Thats what I meant but didn't put it very well lol.

We had a Metro once with a gearbox problem & still managed to get it out of the way by "crunching" gears.

The hard shoulder is a dangerous place but the main carriageway is terrifying.

If this happens to you again, just get as far away from the stationary cars as possible, cause that's where the wreckage is gonna be flyng!
