    Question Impreza WRX Test Drive

As you can get a parellel WRX for about £15,500 including metallic paint, just lacking the locking wheel nuts and breakdown recovery, a lot of performance for the money. I had to test drive one, I owned one in 2000 for one year, I sold it due to running costs and my local job looking very dubious and I was a little bit nuts in it as well.

The dealer told me the new model is much better than the orginal I had, almost no turbo lag due to the new 2.5 engine and reduced boost and better handling. I doubted him, he was right the new engine is superb, no turbo lag and no need to drop gears to make swift progress, the road holding of course is superb as you would expect. I headed for some very badly sufaced roads and was amazed at how comfortable it was over the rough terrain and what speeds I could comfortably maintain, the cabin was quiet and solid and I think would remain so over the years. Of course 4 doors and a decent boot are very welcome and make the car quite practical, the economy though is probably around 20 mpg when using the engine and maybe up to 30 mpg on a steady drive in the country.

The problem might be the demon in me which I thought had died, he had not died but simply been on holiday and the WRX made him fly home and exert his evil ways on my driving. I became a nutter over taking everything in sight, I calmed down on the way back and drove within the limit but had to really force myself to do so, I wonder could I live with the car. The high running costs (offset by low purchase price and decent residuals?) are a given, it appeals to me at present because I think I may have become a little frugal over the last few years and maybe dull?

Would I miss the Vectra, the relaxed cruising and easy power and the ability to blend in, the decent handling considering its bulk and layout? I suppose my dream car would be the Impreza with the 150 diesel engine and a soft touch interior, the best of all worlds? I am in no rush to change car but cannot stop considering the WRX as my next car.

I cannot understand though how someone could by an Astra VXR or Focus ST for more money which both offer less practicality and far less performance. I also owned a 350Z and think the WRX is far better, the 350Z looks the best but in every other way the WRX is far superior.

Anyone had similar experiences or thoughts, views welcomed.

In a loyd grossman ‘through the keyhole’ voice… lets take a look at the evidence….
I was a little bit nuts in it
the economy though is probably around 20 mpg when using the engine and maybe up to 30 mpg on a steady drive in the country.
I became a nutter over taking everything in sight, I calmed down on the way back and drove within the limit but had to really force myself to do so, I wonder could I live with the car.
    The high running costs
Virtually a reason in every paragraph lol, but im on your side, the WRX ticks all my boxes too although the high running costs have me intrigued as to exactly how high you mean?

But I love this bit Steve…..
it appeals to me at present because I think I may have become a little frugal over the last few years and maybe dull?
Which you later followed up with ….
I became a nutter over taking everything in sight
Not quite there yet I reckon.. the demon is still there

Cracking cars, with the 2.5 Litre you can get a very drivable quick car with a few changes for not much dough.

STI Injectors, STI Intercooler, STI Turbo or a TD05 16G or 18G and 350bhp easily with a remap

Having just bought a VXR I can answer your question, though you have sort of yourself. 1. The servicing costs are horrendous and frequent on the scooby . 2. The scooby is a saloon and I think the dog might suffocate in the boot *lol*, the estate isn`t really the same and the wife didn`t like it .. 3. Economy, the vxr isn`t quite as much of a guzzler . 4. Insurance . 5. It is only cheaper as an import, which brings me back to 4, insurance ... 6. The vxr is a bit more exclusive, heaps of scoobys around .

So really the purchase price is just the tip of the iceberg, I certainly couldn`t afford to live with one once purchased ...

my son has a Scooby and has to blag a lift to work because his mpg is around 17 in the rush hour traffic. his insurance is nearly 2 grand with seven years no claims.
i get over 40 mpg (cdti 150) not that much slower (especially mid range) and my insurance is £260.
    i rest my case.

My thoughts exactly I used to own a 2000 turbo wagon and the all new 2.5 wrx that I test drove blew me away with its performance and comfortable driving. But Im still going to go for the Zaffy Vxr even though the gear shift is going to take some getting used to...

A few people have said that a CDTi 3.0 with a box will take on a Scooby above 60mph quite easily.......
