    Default Selling scam???

    Folks,

I have recently posted an item for sale on my local gumtree website, I have had contact from a potential buyer who claims that the will give me £30 more than the asking price. The potential buyers says that the item is for his son who is going of to school. The item is listed for sale at £150, but he wants to give me £180. He is stating he will pay using paypal and that he will arrange his own postage. I have no idea where this guy is based, but I am assuming he is not local.

Is this some sort of of scam? I cant figureoutwhy he would offer me morethan the asking price.

Any advice? Should I just ignore this buyer?

Ask for his address anyway you will still need to put it on the parcel whether he arranges the pickup or not.

If he send you a paypal payment, dont click on any links in the email you recieve, go to your paypal account via ebay or type it in directly. I've seen the emails come through that say "you have funds" with a link in the email. Website looks pretty close to paypals but its a scam to get your details. Not saying this guy is but you have to be careful with electronic money.

The only thing with using paypal is the credit card chargeback, all he has to do is say the item was faulty or never arrived and his CC company will refund him, take the money from paypal who in turn will take the money from you. I'd say cheque or postal order if he won't give you his address.

This is a scam guys. I had this when I was selling a tv only a few months ago. Again they offer more and say they will pay through Pay pal. But I heard that they put in an objection due to the condition and Paypal pay them back. By that time you have allowed them to uplift.

If I recall rightly they get an over seas company to uplift. its a scam why would any one wish to pay more?

If its too good to be true and all that....................

    Dont do it mate!!

This happened to me once via eBay. I listed a phone for £180.00 +£9.99 P+P and someone did a BIN on it and paid me £235.00 and asked for it to be shipped to Estonia, of course via Paypal (and I had a similar thing, it was for a son's B'day present in 3 days). They said they paid me extra for better shipping!

Anyway, I spoke to paypal and they couldnt see a problem as the payment was clear, etc, etc and even said it would be safe to send it.

Anyway, my alarm bells were ringing as the chap wanted the phone sent to Estonia, and "claimed" that he was working away in Greece (where his account was registered the day before buying).

Anyway, I didnt send it and asked eBay to investigate, 2 days later I got a chargeback-MONEY = GONE!

Proper scam, Greece bloke was actually from Estonia, and he/she got hold of somone's CC details in Greece, falsely registered an eBay account and SCAMS AWAY!

    DONT DONT DO IT MATE!!!

    TAKE IT OFF GUMTREE.

I had another close encounter with an iPod on Gumtree!

    TAKE IT OFF!

    Bye bye Vec B

Thanks for the advice here, I have asked for his address and stated thata cheque or postal order is my prefered payment details. If he does insist on paypal then i will just forget the whole thing.
