first thing harny is to check the universal joint on the bottom of the steering column(sometimes called steering intermediate shaft)if it has siezed up or worn it will clunk!! as the joint changes angle.is it B or a C what year.

hard to say when you can't see car but if pump is faulty i would expect steering to get heavy, have you had the steering warning light on dash at all.they are electric over hydraulic systems not like most vehicles with hydraulic steering.check U/J first before you start spending mega bucks.doe's the car wander at all or is it keeping a straight line on uneven surfaces

don't know the cost bud, check it first job,if vx have checked it out steering joints should be ok,but then i would expect them to check u/j but you never know with the stealers.(could have been a 16 year old that checked it you never know)

universal joint on bottom ofsteering column if you look at bottom of steering in engine bay the u/j is clamped on to shaft with a nut and bolt ,looks like a small propshaft joint.
