Exclamation Basics on Traction Control, ABS & Snowy weather?!

Hey folks, hope someone can give me some advice?

I have a 2003 2.2 SRI. With the snowy weather here in Scotland terrible ive been having nightmare journerys!

When taking off in long queues of traffic my wheels seem to be going crazy with the traction control flashing and unpleasant grinding and crunching noises. The other cars dont seem to have any issues or doing the same so I was wondering if there could be any technical issues. The SRI just doesnt seem to be handling the road as well as other cars.

Also when braking it felt like my breaks just jammed and were rock solid, unpleasant again with cars in front n me still moving.

    Thoughts?

The technical issue is the way it's being driven - what you're experiencing is the mechnical manifestation of traction control and ABS - in these winter conditions you need to do everything gently - accelerating on very light throttle and braking gently but far earlier.

It probably won't help if you're on "summer" tyres - but you're in the majority there.

Firstly, don't use 1st gear when launching, do everything slower (driving, acc, steer and brakes) and leave plenty of room.

I think your are just over egging it.

2nd gear is great for taking off in snow, I have a diesel which does make it easier pulling off in 2nd, granted, but give it a try.

A traction control switch will allow you to disable the control, thus allowing the wheels to spin freely, this can sometime be an aid!!

i'm Auto and that has been great for the snow, i spent 5 hours on Monday night driving home in the snow and it was just fine for pulling away (in winter mode) i think it was pulling away in 2nd and appeared to lock up a bit when off the throttle.
Had to use manual to hold it in 1st on downhill stretches but no hardship.
Considering the 2.8 V6's have reasonably wide tyres i was impressed with how well she coped with the snow.
When the wheels did spin when pulling away, there did appear to be a decent amount of logic in the TC to allow the wheels to spin as long as i didn't give it too much throttle.

Common sense really, pull off slower and only use the break pedal if absolutely needed, slow down using the gearbox.

Failing that book a driving lesson and ask for some winter driving advice.
Now I need a turbo to keep up!
