    Default The red line

Just want some feedback is it good or bad to take the car to the red line once in a while, I've heard for diesels it can be a good thing but how about my 1.8 vvti? Just curious if it does more harm than good?

It won't hurt an engine, once it has reached temperature to give it a spanking every now and then. I'm not sure it will do it any good either though if it is driven properly normally. By normal I mean using the rev range.

I'm not talking about flooring it, using a lower gear burn off any gunk at high revs.

This has nothing to do with his post and is pointless, he only asked if it was safe to take his car to the red line or not and a simple yes or no is what he is looking for not a silly lecture on speeding.

Oh and he could be talking about any gear as 1st or 2nd isn't going to break the law is it, might be an idea to give the guy a break.

To the op - it's not a bad thing to rev the car to just below the red line as petrols like to be revved as long as it's up to temp before you do it. cars need opened up now and again - clears their throats so to speak.

Thank you Voxer, I'm not looking to red line in 4th or 5th just as previously suggested, just to drop to a lower gear. At the moment where I live its near impossible to go above 1500rpm in these conditions people are leaving there cars and walking.

More to the point where did he even say he was going to drive it on the red line, he might be sitting stationary

On the other side of the coin. My wife does not rev her Vectra high enough. I tell her to put her foot down (not to speed past the speed limit). But see daudles along in too high a gear. I keep telling her that she is doing more damage to the engine being in the wrong gear (making the engine labour) than she will do by reving it up more.
