    Default Traction Control and/or 4x4 (snow/ice)

For all those people out there who think that having 4 wheel drive or traction control is the "miracle cure" and will somehow stop you sliding about on icy roads.....

If you want more grip get winter tyres and btw, STOP DRIVING LIKE *****!!!

    There I feel better now

I had an argument with my step father last night because he insisted his Lexus could not slide/spin/lose grip on Ice because of traction control. He insists his wheels won't spin on ice and therefore can't lose grip, I asked for his keys and asked whether his handbrake worked "I promise no wheel spin", strangely enough he declined

Seriously..... this marketing that tells "Jo Average" that 4x4 or traction control somehow stops you slipping on ice/snow, it's dangerous, misleading and irresponsible!

Think some ppl out there need to realise that shoving into first and revving like mad wont get you anywhere on ice

I saw an Audi tt with four wheel drive wheelspin on ice all four wheels were spinning. He did not get up the hill any better than me with two wheel drive.

    Exaclty, where's the advantage? lol

Instead of spinning two wheels, you spin four

I'll never forget a video I saw last year of two cars going down an icy hill, the estate car at the front, had no trouble at all.... The Freelander behind it, ended up in the ditch

Unfortunately, mid-size 4x4s have become one of the "must haves" among the fashion-concious younger affluent set but they all think that 4wd makes them impregnable.

It doesn't take much technical empathy to realise that bigger, heavier, vehicles on "summer" tyres will just slide faster, further, when conditions are slippery.

I personally won't use "summer" tyres - the UK climate just isn't dry or warm enough - I use "all-season" tyres which cope better with wet/damp roads in the summer and winter although ideally I'd keep an extra set of wheels with proper "snow/ice" tyres on for winter.

In reality, the vehicle only makes a small difference - it's the lack of skill of most drivers that get into trouble and/or make things difficult for others.

Some drivers do know how to use 4wd (no apology for posting this before, I also drive a Subaru) http://www.dumpert.nl/mediabase/7462...or_sneeuw.html he may have had 240-320 bhp available but he probably just had the engine idling, not much more anyway.

And appropriate tyres for the conditions I would dare say, I doubt any of the scoobs ive seen on performance summer tyres or semi-slicks, would have been able to help much it that situation.

There in lies the point, the tyre's are vital.

Would agree with that, just helped push one of the girls at works scoob with near slicks out of the car park at work onto the gritted access road as it just sat there unable to put any power to the wheels as the tyres wouldn't grip.
