    Default redirecting a letter

I am responsible for forwarding any mail address to my landlord. Was just wondering, if the letter is unopened, is it true I can just score address out, put new address on and repost?

Yes, unless it is addressed as C/O (care of).

Just cross out your address and write next to it his address and post as normal.

No, as the item has been posted
You need to replace the address and pay the postage again!

However, if you manage to realise this early enough you can return it back to the post person that delivered it

Equally, you can setup mailing redirect, which applies by surname to the address

I was under the impression you'd only have to do that if the letter was opened.

I don't want to return to sender, it's a final electricity or gas bill. My landlord not getting it would just mean Scottish Power would send debt collectors after them eventually because the bill wouldn't get paid since they were unaware of it.

Equally, I ain't paying for a mail redirection for my landlord. My lease does say I am responsible for forwarding any mail to him/her.

I'm going to give it a try because I do believe it is the case and was just looking for confirmation of it.

Rubbish - my parents have been forwarding on my mail to me for years by just placing an address label over the old address and sticking in the post box... I live on a military camp, so my address is useless to credit scroing agencies, and keeping it at home means I can get credit ar more easily than if I had my banking details registered to my work address...

As long as it is unopened and not 'care of', then it will and does work with no extra postage.

Royal Mail have the right to charge excess postage for redirecting mail that has already been delivered, and it happens as well!

Yes you're right. The Royal Mail are required to deliver to the address on the envelope (even if they know that the person addressed does not live there) and that is that. However they will normally redeliver if you just readdress and repost it so long as this doesn't become habitual. (I get letters from time to time like this from my previous address - christmas cards too just now).
