    Default Auto gearbox oil

Does anyone know what type of oil the 1.9 cdti auto box uses, and also how much VX take to flush and change it?

If it's AF40 6 speed gearbox that you have, the oil's P/N is 93165147, GM oil ATF AW-1. You can check the type of gearbox looking down, between the engine and the battery. You will see a metallic plate which says the gearbox type.

Why does it need flushing? That's only necessary when the autobox already has serious problems, even then a full overhaul is probably best.

Drain/refill only replaces about 1/2 the nominal contents of the autobox.

The oil specification is in the Service Booklet - not the Owner's Manual !!

If it's the AF40 gearbox, the only recommended oil is the one that I wrote before. I used it in my gearbox.

    NO !!!!

That's for manual gearboxes and/or differentials, particularly limited slip diffs.

It'll need to be an ATF - I just don't which one but Dexron 2 was needed for early GM autoboxes with Dexron 3 for more recent ones but it may have changed again.

Because of climate differences, and local preferences, there may be variations in recommendation from one country to another.

Never found another oil recommended for the AF40 gearbox. The only one is the one I mentioned.

I'm guessing from your profile that you've got the 5 speed box which makes it the AF33?

From the Haynes manual, they say use VX part# 93160393 which, when I wanted some back in July 2008, I Googled the part # and it came back with the same stuff used in Saabs from Parts for Saabs. http://www.partsforsaabs.com/advance...words=93160393. You'll need a max of 4 litres as Haynes say to start with, IIRC, an initial fill of 3.0-3.5lt and then check the level on the dipstick. The filling and checking method is described in Haynes and it's too long winded to explain here.

As VX quoted me £100 to change the AF33 oil in my 02 GSi, this was the only reason I bought the Haynes manual. £20 for Haynes plus £30 (in July 2008) for the oil (delivered price), so I saved £50 and knew the job had been done properly.
