Sounds like you could have a faulty temp sensor

If your car has been run on that day, the core of the engine will say warm for a long time. I've seen it where my glowplug light comes on first time I start it and subsequent starts that day it doesn't because its still warm enough inside.

Equally, the colder it is the longer it should stay on

I would expect to see it for at least 0.5 seconds, increasing to 1.5 seconds when below -5'C
Thats true, many poeple don't notice as it's only on very briefly.

There is not real point in doing that, the system is designed to heat the glow plugs very quickly as M8Internet said.

Doing it again and again won't inprove anything.

I started mine yesterday morning when it was -5 and the car had not been used for 2 days, let the light go out and after a few seconds she fired stright up. But I know if I tred to start it straight away it would have taken alot longer.

I think the biggest problem these days is that diesel engines have come so far in development that they are pretty instant in starting, not like older diesels where you have to wait for the light to go out.

But as soon as the cold weather arrives and the glow plugs take a few seconds to go out, owners start to think there is a problem.
