    Default Keeping battery charged....

What sort of run will keep a battery fully charged this time of year as I'm having issues with my lardy arse car and it keeps dying, had to be jumped 4 times this week, now its on a decent quality battery that was fitted a month ago.

For now I've plug the battery charger on the car now to get it back up to full, but what sort of run will keep it where it should be?

I'd guess around 20mins engine running time. Thats what all the yachts do and ours was charging 3 110AH batteries.... It certainly keep those charged...

If its loosing charge, doesnt that mean either something is constantly on over night etc, or the batteries a duffer? Regardless of weather, it should surely hold enough of a charge to start the car?

But the car also hasn't been used, its spent a lot of the last 4/5 months sat around, as far as I can tell nothing is on in the car to drain the battery, but I'm gonna charge it and see if it loses charge while its being used, if not I'll get a new battery under warranty and go from there.

All lead acid batteries self-drain when stood doing nothing - for an ordinary car battery in a UK climate, the rate is up to 1% per day - ie completely flat in as little as three months.

    Recharge the battery every month.

If the battery isn't needed for an alarm, take it off, keep it in the warm and keep it constantly connected to a "smart" charger, as little as £12 from Aldi/Lidl - BUT - don't leave a conventional charger connected for more than 24 hours.

I had an issue recently with starting.
New battery fitted February this year.
Car difficult to start clicking sounds, car was checked over for two hours at a very helpful main dealer garage. Things disconnected & tested etc. Nothing found, I watched the testing & commented to the electrical guy that I kept the car garaged but not locked.

His recommendation was to lock the car as the Vectra ‘goes to sleep’ within ten minutes when locked.
However can take some time if left unlocked (battery drain ?) Bearing mind that sometime I do not use the car for a few days this sounded quite logical.

Since this happened back in September & I now lock the car I have no problem starting even with the low temperatures over the last week or so & car left for three weeks while I was on holiday.

Hope this helps some of you ………………

If mine is going to be sat around for more than a couple of weeks I use a solar trickle charger. Just attach to the battery and run the line out the passenger top corner of the bonnet and in the passenger door, then use the rubber suckers to mount the solar panel low in the screen. Worked many times on both this 3.2 GSi and the 3.0 Omega Elite I had before.... and only about £11 off fleabay

I always disconect the battery or remove it from the car and charge it in the garage. You probably will need to put the radio code back in. The radio code is on the car pass.
