Default All the recent temperature questions

Having read a few threads regarding this and the most probable answer being "veccy C's do this" it's worth noting -

In the recent weather conditions we are seeing do you really know how much antifreeze is in your cooling system? Or are you going by a previous owners word? Running little or no antifreeze will obviously cause freezing problems. Water alone will cause the block internals to rust which lead to premature failure of the water pump and gunked up waterways.

If your unsure - drain the system and fill with the recommended summer coolant/antifreeze mix. Do not mix two different types of antifreeze together.

In these conditions (-1 C) if your temp gauge does not move or go's rapidly to the danger zone then there is most likely a problem, stop the car and switch off the engine, and check it over.

I have seen hundreds of cars coming in with little or no antifreeze due to previous owners having no mechanical knowledge and simply 'topping up' with plain water during the summer months when they think its fine.

In the winter months the most important things in your cars engine is oil and coolant, if in doubt, get it checked by a professional as 'assumption' is a huge no-no in mechanical engineering

biggest problem of not having any antifreeze is cracking the block. Ive seen it a few times.
Bottom line with a cooling system is if its leaking, it shouldnt be. Its a sealed system and isnt designed to "consume" any water.
If it is, get it sorted!

There are simple hydrometers available which indicate the approximate strength/temperature limit by means of 4 balls - just count the number at the top and compare to the scale. I've had mine for years and use it regularly.

When draining/refilling coolant I always put 50:50 in - now we don't get temperatures that cold in this country, not even in record years (-27C) but it does permit topping up with plain water without reducing the anti-freeze too much.

50:50 is a more efficient heat transfer fluid anyway, so summer cooling is marginally better than, say 25:75.
