Has nayone done this and happy with it? I tried it with an old car and it was a waste of time but I'm struggling with space. I've seen a thread with someones in a cubby hole but I don't want to lose that either!

from previous experiance (not my car, my mates) it was a total disaster. Every time the sub pumped out bass the parcel shelf would rattle un-controllably. We tried to re-inforce it but it still would rattle. Sometimes the rattle was as loud as the bass
HTH
I wondered abou trying to make one out of thick mdf and then provide somesort of damping by putting foam along where it sits on the plastic bits?
dont do it mate will sound and perform terrible.. you really need a box...
I might not bother at all with a sub. I'm after quality not quantity with the sound so maybe some components is the best way forward.
If you want high quality go for a brand like diamond or DLS. Their subs are well suited for more than just making a thumping noise. Obviously make sure you get an amp to match
Its actually really hard to get good sound. Theres all sorts of angles and volumes needed for each size sub to get the ultimate set up. Better off buying a ready made box Ebay do them cheap like..
You could always look into a stealth shelf and free air sub.
focal component are pretty good mate.
