yes i know it sounds daft , but before my father sadly passed away three years ago , he invented a manhole . let me explain ,he came up with the idea after seeing how , when a road is resurfaced, they always run the tarmac down to the manhole which causes a badly recessed manhole cover. his system resolves the problem by always keeping the manhole level with the tarmac(dont want to go into too much detail ) he had samples made up and one was subsequently fitted into a road nearby, and it works perfectly. what i would like to know is, how do we go about selling the patent to some company or other and so get some sort of return for his efforts as it costs quite alot of money to maintain the patent, any advice greatly received

If you own the patent, you will need to basically take it around all drain manufacturers and try to sell it to them

Good luck to you mate! I always wish there was something I could think up and invent that could retire me comfortably now.

If I was you vectrapogo, I wouldn't sell the patent. That means that you'll get one (maybe large) lump sum and that'll be it.

What you should do is keep the patent and find a manufacturer who wants to license the product i.e. you grant them a license to manufacture the manhole cover and you receive a royalty for every one made/sold - possibly an initial lump sum to start with.

Just think about the guy that invented the Cat's Eye. He got a royalty for every one made/sold!!!

It's a bit like me with my images. I never, ever sell/give my copyright. I will, however, give people/companies a license to use. Cost dependent on where, how often etc. etc. they want to use the image(s).

If you do find a manufacturer that is interested, I'd strongly suggest you find a solicitor who is experienced in Intellectual Property/Licensing/Patent matters.
