Default If I lend my car to a relative, are they insured ?

Basically I am in the dog house with my missus, because my mother in laws husband had their car written off today by some pillock in a white van, and my mother in law has a hospital appointment on Thursday. My missus said " I am thinking about lettiing them borrow the car on Thursday, what do you think?"
I of course said they wouldnt be insured, as I think they only had 3rd party on their old banger.
So would the car be covered?

My Understanding is They would only be covered if they were fully comp and it said on their insurance they were insured to drive someone elses car if they had permision, However this only up for Third Party.

    More than likely not!

You need to check his motor insurance certificate and see if he has the extension to drive other vehicles 3rd party only.

Some insurers do and some don't.

Remember if he is covered he is 3rd party only!

If they need to use the car get day insurance cover, its about a tenner day (cheaper if its for a longer period)

Don't risk it, it's just not worth it, third party doesn't cover another car not owned by the policy holder.

Some fully comp policies don't even have third party cover

I have had 3rd party Fire and theft cover before and that entitled me to drive other cars with owners consent but was only covered 3rd party, I would advise to get day cover that way your fully covered.

you'd have to put them on your insurance as a named driver and pay the additonal premium,

If my misses kindly offered out my car (she knows better) I'd tell her to jog on !!

they can get a taxi , would could less than putting them on your policy,

if they crash your car 3rd party are they in a position to sort it ?

If yes then tell them to hire a car or buy a run about.

If no then too risky !
