to be honest there's not really another name for a 'free air sub'
the main reason not much comes back is because hardly anyone makes them anymore, much better sound can be had from a sub and sealed/ported box.
just out of curiosity, why you want a free air sub?

    To go in here mate

Got a vibe in here at the moment which should be in a ported box. At lowish volume it sounds great but when out in the country and its cranked up it starts to distort a bit. Its all sound deafened now and sounds better but it really needs a free air like CDTI's. Ive tried making a box for it, but to go in the small alcove it has to be very small and subs for small boxes cost ££££££. PS I fill the boot for work so a stand alone box is out of the question.

What headunit are you running this sub on?? Any amps involved ?? If it's distorting it might be the way you have set it up ?? Is it a 8 or 10" sub??

    Hi pimm, brucey bonus,
the hole side panel pops of no trouble in fact its less hassle to do that than to try and get your hand in with a spanner.
And pimm its running of standard CRD 2005 VDO head unit through a High input to rca line converter with gains up full then ends up in a Vibe Mono-block matched to the sub.

hmm, it's not really a free air sub you want then, as the 'true' free air sub is a sub that is designed NOT to be in a box... i.e. mounted on a parcel shelf etc.
instead of using the air in a box, it uses the air around the sub, so if it was mounted in a parcel shelf, it would use the air in the boot.

the i'm assuming you have a Vibe 'Black Air' (or the previous model, can't remember the name) and from the pic i would have a guess at a 10" (maybe 12") - if that the case then it will need 1.5 cubic feet inside the box.
Port-wise... no sub should distort due to having a ported box or not... it will simply sound different.
a none ported box will give a more punchy sound, whereas a ported box will give a slightly longer bass note (depending on size/length of port)

Your distortion problem will be down to having the setup wrong... to start off with turn down the gain... the gain should not be turned up to 100%.
i would recommend turning the gain on the amp down so the sub is not running.
make sure the amp is set to low pass filter, and the frequency is not set too high.
then turn up your head unit to a volume that the rest of the speakers can cope with.
then you can start turning the gain up on your amp... this will take a bit of practice but eventually you will get it set just right so that you have enough bass in the car... remember a sub should compliment the sound, not drown it out!

i would also recommend a BC10 (vibe part number) - which is a remote bass controller that sits inline with your RCA cable and then you can adjust the gain of your amp from inside the car.
a great little accessory for tunes that have slightly more or less bass than others.

sorry for the lengthy post !

    just to clear up...
the problem will be either to size of the box... or the setup of the system.
oh, and i know it sounds soft, but make sure the RCA cable is using either a dedicated 'sub-out' or the rear output of the head unit (i know a lot of people that have used the front output and wonder why it sounds ****!)

I had the bc10 when I had the full set up (in its box) in my pug, It needed a good strong sub out to work properly, my 4v sub out didn't seem strong enough. Would have been a help here but left it in the pug when I sold it. By the way the amp is out of the active box the sub came from (CBR10 I think) so has no low pass/ high filter just gain, crossover(40hz to 160hz) and a phase switch (what does that do by the way) The high level to rca is not powered but has 2 volume controls 1 for each channel.
