Default When does your cigarette lighter light up?

I've noticed my cigarette lighter doesn't light up and I was wondering if/when other people's lit up. I don't use it but it's annoying me that it might not work properly.

According to the manual it should come on with the ignition but it doesn't. I know sometimes the manual isn't always right so I wondered if it actually came on with the lights? Nope, it doesn't.

I don't want to go trying to change the bulb if there's no need especially as a search on the forum suggests that it's a pig of a job.

I would appreciate anyone letting me know when their cigarette lighter does/doesn't light up. Thanks.

PS I guess the power socket fitted to later models without a smoking pack may not have a light in it, but I don't know.

Slightly off-base, but sounds interesting. Linky?

Is it this one perhaps? http://www.spotlightcartorch.co.uk/

Does the socket work if you plug something in?

Yes, the cigarette lighter works - I checked it with a mobile phone charger and the lighter itself (first time in over 6 years!).

Once thing I noticed is that there are 3 connections - 2 thick wires in one T-shaped connector which connect to the bottom of the lighter socket. I presume these are positive and negative for the actual ligher as the cables are pretty thick.

Then there's a single connector with a thin wire than plugs on to the bottom of the lighting ring that runs around the actual lighter. I presume this must share the negative for the lighter itself in order to form a circuit otherwise it'd never work.

Best way to check would be to use a mutimeter to see if there is power getting to the wire. If there is then I guess it is the ring thats stopped. Or as you said earlier another cost cutting measure

I was just thinking about a multimeter test. Funny, how you sometimes forget to start with the simple things. I guess if I put it on 12 volts and connect positive to the single connector and negative,. I should get a reading if it works. This should also tell me when it works - with the ignition, with the lights, or whatever.

I might order one of those torch things seeing as I never use the cigarette lighter for lighting cigarettes... A cheap Christmas present for myself after spending £540 getting the airbag ECU replaced.

from what i gather, power is supplied to the cigarette lighter(socket) when the ignition/key is turned to the 2nd position. (i.e. when all your dashboard lights come on).

Thats the way, try touching between the terminals on the battery first to make sure its working before you start though
